Key takeaways

  • 95% of families reported high satisfaction with video consultations for diabetes care
  • 89% felt the quality of remote visits matched in-person appointments for routine follow-ups
  • Video visits were used for monitoring device data, adjusting treatment, and diabetes education
  • This hybrid model combined remote consultations with continuous glucose monitors and automated insulin delivery systems

What the Study Looked At

Researchers in this real-world study examined how video consultations worked within a hybrid care model—a blend of remote and in-person visits—for children and teens with Type 1 diabetes. The families in the study were all using automated insulin delivery systems and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology. Between 2022 and 2024, the team conducted 162 video consultations across 18 families who adopted this hybrid approach.

The study was designed to explore whether video visits could complement traditional healthcare while improving access to care and keeping patients engaged with their diabetes management.

How Families Used Video Visits

During video consultations, healthcare providers and families reviewed device data together, made treatment adjustments, and covered diabetes education topics. The visits served as routine follow-up appointments, allowing ongoing communication without requiring a trip to the clinic.

What Families Reported

Family satisfaction was notably high. Of the 18 families surveyed, 17 (95%) reported high satisfaction with their video consultation experience, using the highest ratings on a 5-point satisfaction scale. Even more striking: 89% of families said the quality of care during video visits felt comparable to face-to-face appointments for routine follow-ups.

These findings suggest that for families already managing Type 1 diabetes with technology and established relationships with their care team, video consultations can be a practical option for staying connected and making adjustments to treatment plans.

What This Means

This study adds to a growing body of evidence that telemedicine can play a meaningful role in diabetes care. By reducing the need to travel for routine visits while maintaining quality care, hybrid models may help families stay engaged with their treatment and access support more easily. However, this was a small, real-world study, and results reflect families who chose to use video consultations and who were already using advanced diabetes technology. Individual experiences may vary.
